Happy Anniversary To Me

April 21st, 2010

On April 15, 2009 I decided it was time to start writing a book. The idea for the plot and characters had been in my head for a long time and I knew it was the perfect time to pick up a pencil and paper and begin. I would be forty before the year was out and I felt like it was time to do something in addition to being a wife and mom.

But where and how to start was the question I didn’t know how to answer. So I went to the Barnes and Noble near where we were vacationing and picked up the book, Write a Novel in a Month. I knew it would take much more than four weeks to get a decent book done, but I liked the way the book was laid out and it seemed to cover a lot of the basics.

Over the next six months I read over twenty books on writing, took two online classes, wrote a 78,000 word novel, had my two best friends critique it for me (One’s an avid reader, the other a writer.), and threw a small party celebrating the completion of my book. By the end of the year, I set up this web site (with the help of DreamStar Studios), went to my first writer’s conference, and pitched my novel to agents and editors.

And then a funny thing happened. I couldn’t stop writing. It has become so much of who I am, that I now get cranky if I don’t get a chance to write at least a few times a week. Right now I am roughly 68,000 words into my second novel and believe it or not, thoughts are starting to run through my head for a third book.

So happy anniversary to me. It has been a year since I began my crazy journey as a writer and I hope it will never end.
